Billy Rea Sample, a native Texan born on January 12, 1938, in Shelbyville, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, at the age of 87. Billy was a proud United States Army Veteran whose steadfast dedication to service and community was felt by all who knew him.
Throughout his life, Billy lived without limitations, embodying a spirit of generosity that was unmatched. He was known for his willingness to lend a helping hand, offer financial support, and devote his time to anyone in need. His legacy of love was instilled in his children, whom he taught to love and be loved, never hesitating to give big hugs that could brighten anyone's day.
A true conversationalist, Billy had an engaging personality and was beloved by many. He never met a stranger, and as his mother would say, he was "born talking." His warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. A faithful servant to the LORD, his faith guided him throughout his life and radiated him in his interactions.
Billy had a zest for life and enjoyed various hobbies and interests. He loved watching the Houston Texans and Astros, playing pool, and attending the Porter Drag Races. His enthusiasm for drag racing inspired his son Jason, who eventually followed in those footsteps, highlighting the enduring influence Billy had on his family.
Billy leaves behind cherished family members who will carry on his memory. He is survived by his children, Jason Sample and partner Alicia Goldsmith, and John Sample and wife Pamela. His legacy continues through his granddaughters, Hannah Sample and Ashlyn Sample, as well as his brothers, Travis Sample and Aubrey Neal Sample.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Aurbin Sample and Nellie Mae Hite, his son, James Sample, and his brother, Larry Sample.
In recognition of his life and lasting impact, a graveside service will be held on July 22, 2025, at 1:30 PM at the Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who stood by their side, offered prayers, and supported them during this time. Billy is at peace now, looking over his loved ones and continuing his legacy in Heaven.
