Chano Contreras, entered into rest on April 7, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on December 30, 1947, in Pearsall, Texas, Chano became a steadfast figure for his family and community. His hard work and resilience exemplified a life spent nurturing not just his crops, but the hearts of all who knew him.
In his early years, Chano developed a deep love for the great outdoors, delighting in hunting and fishing—activities that brought him a profound sense of peace and joy. He was a tough, stubborn, and hardworking man, yet beneath that rugged exterior laid a gentle heart; cherished his family dearly. Chano always made it a priority to ensure that his loved ones were well taken care of, embodying pride in every aspect of his life.
Beyond his role as a roughneck, Chano's passions included ranching, listening to music and singing, along with the simple pleasures of bar-b-queing and enjoying delicious meals. His fondness for playing Nintendo revealed another side of him, one filled with laughter and childlike joy that captivated those around him.
Chano is survived by his loving daughters, Maria Contreras, Connie Contreras and husband Jimmy Hernandez, and Delia Contreras and husband Miguel Munoz-Rincon. He also leaves behind his cherished brothers, Jose Contreras, Antonio Contreras and wife Eva, and Pablo Contreras; dear sisters, Catalina Blair, and Maria Wise and husband Steven; treasured grandchildren, Celia De Leon, Juan De Leon Jr., Jesse De Leon, and Hailey Hernandez; and a great-grandson, Juan De Leon III. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, other loving family members, and a host of treasured friends who will miss him dearly.
Chano’s life was not without its losses; he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Contreras, who played an integral role in his journey. He also mourns the loss of his parents, Donaciano Contreras and Selia Contreras, and brothers Mike, Santiago, Domingo, and Frutoso Contreras.
