Edward Carroll Walker Jr.

August 14, 1956 — May 6, 2024

Edward Carroll “Chief” Walker Jr. also known as “The Cherokee” returned to our Heavenly Father on Monday, May 6, 2024. He was born on August 14, 1956 to parents Edward Carroll Walker Sr. and Roma Jewel Childress Walker in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Mr. Walker graduated from Yazoo City High School with high honors, and distinguished himself as a scholar. He went on to attend Mississippi Valley State University, where he met his first wife, Jo Ann, with whom he had three children (Buckey, Joshua and Christine). Before completing his education, he took leave of college to join the United States Army, where he served his country honorably as an infantryman (11 Bravo) in both South Korea and Panama. He would later return to Valley State and complete his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History.

After his tenure in the Army, Mr. Walker held a number of roles with both Mississippi Training schools. He then served as Chief of the Forensic Security Unit at Mississippi State Hospital, and later worked as a substitute teacher in the Jackson Public School District before becoming disabled. He later married his wife of 31 years, Cheryl, with whom he had one child (Jessica).

Mr. Walker enjoyed watching Westerns and SciFi films, game shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and playing chess. He was also an avid reader who loved talking about politics and all things academic.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents; son, Aster Joshua Walker; and brothers, Gayland Walker and LeRon Scott. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Cheryl, his children Edward “Buckey” Carroll Walker III, Christine Wells (Tiger) and Jessica Jones, his brother Woodrow “Woody” L. Walker; his sisters, Lorita W. Lee (Eddie), Stephanie Walker, Tonja W. Johnson (John) and Hope Katrina Walker; grandchildren Logan Wells and David Walker; and a host of loving family and treasured friends.
