Obituary

James Raymond Dawson, a man whose warmth and humor touched the lives of many, passed away on April 2, 2026, in New Caney, Texas. Born on September 27, 1960, in Houston, Texas, James lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his faith, and his work.

A retired truck driver, James and his wife Gayle spent countless miles traveling across the lower 48 states. Known for his reliability and dedication, James was a faithful worker who took pride in his career. Beyond his professional accomplishments, those close to him remember James as a prankster with a great love for people. He cherished his family and friends deeply, finding boundless joy in the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James’s passions extended to collecting guns and knives, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship and history. Yet, above all, his proudest accomplishment was his unwavering commitment to his Christian faith, living as a faithful servant of the Lord.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 14 years, Gayle Dawson, and his son JR Dawson along with his wife, Brandi. James’s family circle also includes his sisters Catherine Vangilder, Debra Sims, and Wendy Baxter with her husband Troy. His legacy lives vibrantly through his grandchildren—Ryan Dawson and his wife Sydney, Mikayla Kendrick and her husband Thomas, and Elizabeth “BJ” Dawson—and his great-grandchildren Mahaylee Dawson, Noah Dawson, Cannon Laymon, Loryn Laymon, Castle Laymon, Evee Kendrick, Luna Kendrick, Grayson Kendrick, and Beaux Kendrick. In addition to these cherished family members, he is remembered fondly by numerous other relatives and a wide circle of friends.

James was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Cecil Dawson and Mary Florence Dawson; his first wife, Karla Dawson; his great-grandparents, Raymond Luther Windsor and Beatrice Hilda Windsor; and his parents, Marvin Cecil Dawson and Carol Nadine Dawson.

A visitation will be held at Neal Funeral Home, located at 200 S Washington Ave in Cleveland, Texas, on April 6, 2026, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. This will be followed immediately by a funeral service from 2:00 PM at the same location. These gatherings offer a moment for all who knew James to honor his memory and celebrate a life well lived.

James Raymond Dawson’s warmth, humor, and faith will be dearly missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
