Obituary

Thomas Newton Jones, beloved by many and cherished for his steadfast character, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, in Cleveland, Texas. Born on March 1, 1937, in Defuniak Springs, Florida, Thomas enriched the lives of all who knew him throughout a long and meaningful journey.

Thomas’ early years were marked by a determination and vibrance that would carry through his life. He attended Central High School in Phoenix City, Alabama, before graduating with the Class of 1954 from Hallie Turner High School in Columbus, Georgia. Thomas furthered his education with an Associate’s Degree, a testament to his dedication to self-improvement and lifelong learning.

Known affectionately as “Torpedo Tom” in his youth, he earned this memorable nickname when he played half back for the Red Devil Football Team—demonstrating not just athleticism but also a unique spirit and camaraderie that drew people to him. These qualities foreshadowed a lifetime of friendship and respect.

Thomas was proud to serve his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force, embodying discipline, honor, and commitment to duty. His tenure in the military became a cornerstone of his legacy, one that filled his family and friends with gratitude and pride.

A man guided by his faith, Thomas was a faithful servant to the Lord. Those close to him can speak to his deep and abiding love for family and friends. Though not a rich man in material things, it was often remarked that “his riches were his friends.” Thomas counted his blessings in the relationships he nurtured, and he was deeply loved in return—an enduring legacy of kindness and loyalty.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mereda L. Jones. He leaves behind his children, Thomas D. Jones and wife Eva B., Robert D. Jones and wife Rebecca, Sharon M. Jones, and husband Steven G. Bell, as well as cherished grandchildren: Samari J. Bell, Thaddeus T. Bell, Noah G. Bell, Michael Coon and wife Tiffany, and Brandon Coon. Thomas is also survived by nieces, nephews and other loving family members and a host of friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Ezra Hiram Jones, mother Lucille Murell Jones, brother Charles Jones, and sisters Hazel Jones, Helen Jones, Betty Jones, Joann Jones, Sue Ellen Jones and his grandson Dalton Wilson. Their love and company he now joins in peaceful reunion.
